In June 2025, Rubin released a "data preview," a small set of observations taken with the commissioning camera. This data set is being used by scientists as a pathfinder for much of Rubin's science to come. A small number of citizen science projects are being released with this data set.

We knew that public participation in science would be a huge part of Rubin Observatory's success, so we partnered with Zooniverse, the largest and most popular platform where everyone can get involved. With our input, the team at Zooniverse has made it easy for researchers to build projects that use Rubin data.
